It's a pretty good filter and isn't a loud as i expected. It's pretty much impossible to get any type of fan to run on high to be silent, but it was quieter than my fan i have in... Like so many other purchasers, we are plagued by the very loud and annoying rattling sound. It started about one month after we bought. It sounds like the fan is out of balance. We've had it for 5 months and it works great. When we open the casing to look at the filter it is filthy so I know it's working. We use this in our kitty litter area and it really helps with the dust and smell. I advise everyone who buys this to take out the filter and check the case/fan. I took my filter out and noticed a big hole of broken plastic... must have happened in shipping. I had an older Vornado air cleaner. It lasted 17 years. When it died I went for another one. Much better looking, but built cheap. I had bought 2. I can sleep at night with this running. Just got this today and it's making a loud grumbling/rattling sound on all settings.

It had survived my high school, college, grad school, and working years on top of banging around and hauling from floor to floor or state to state.
