The humidifiers would emit a white sticky dust that would get into everything, and was a royal pain to clean. Eventually we isolated the humidifiers as the culprit and then tested our water and realized that it was the real culprit. We bought additional EZCal packets to clean the humidifiers but had to go through multiple cleanings to get results which soon proved to be very expensive.

We did some investigating (i.e., scouring the packet for clues and found that it was made by Urnex for Plaston (the makers of the Air-O-Swiss brand of humidifiers). We searched the Urnex website and found that they sell the descaler much cheaper and in larger quantities. Initially we purchased a box that had a total of 100 packets for $57, but that price has since dropped to $43 with free shipping. See B004L8XB8A It would be $1.29 for a 3-pack (without the Air-O-Swiss label). Compare that to $7.99 (at the time of this review, for a 3-pack of the Air-O-Swiss labeled package).We continued to using bottled water (very expensive) and more frequent cleanings of the humidifiers with the Urnex labeled descaler, while we searched for a high quality Reverse Osmosis (R.O.) system. We ended up using one from SpectraPure (Tempe, Arizona) which is now a 5-stage system (one washable first stage, 2 cartridges followed by the R.O. membrane and a final polisher (cartridge) which dropped our water hardness to 4 ppm with new filters and when the hardness reaches about 50 ppm we replace the 3 cartridges for $26 (after about 10,000 gallons of water) and wash the pre-filter twice a year.

The result is we have very good water that tastes great, is better for cooking, and produces no white dust when used in the humidifiers. We use the descaler only seasonally as preventative maintenance. Ironically the humidifier made our air more breathable but the white dust that it produced got into everything and was hard to clean. The worst part is that we were actually breathing that white dust which coated our lungs and we were damaging them with the white dust. sharp air purifier kc-840eSo if you have a lot of scale (calcium) production in the humidifier, please look into a high quality Reverse Osmosis system and consider using that instead of tap water which could be damaging your lungs when used in the humidifier especially if you notice any white sticky dust in the house. whirlpool whispure 510 hepa air purifier
