air purifier ionic breeze

Written Short answer: Don't buy it now. Let me consider the functioning of ionic air purifiers for 2 types of pollutants: Particulates: naturally, the particulates are removed from air by gravitation settling and by diffusion. The ionic purifiers try to speed up these process by charging these particles by the ions they produce. Once charged, there are electrostatic forces as well which force the particles to stick to each other or get attracted to some surface and thereby settling down faster. Other gases: Theoretically ionizers can also treat some other gases in part by ionizing them and thereby (theoretically) decomposing them into simpler molecules like CO2 and H2O. Now why not to buy them for now: Simply for particulate removal, they can be much more efficient than the  HEPA filters considering no pressure drop or nil maintenance. Now although they are used industrially, the do produce chemically active ions which go on to create chemistry we have barely started to understand. Even when the companies claim that they produce ozone less than the prescribed standards, the long chain of reactions caused by them can create products of wide variety.
And contrary to as proposed by many manufacturers that the ions break the pollutants down to simple molecules like CO2 and H2O, some studies show that they actually make the pollutant molecules react with each other forming longer chain of molecules! Here is a line from the abstract:Starting with amines of low mass (m/z < 200), compounds of molecular masses above 1000 Da were observed in the plasma air purifier. The papers goes on to conclude that more research needs to be conducted as we don't know if the byproducts from these plasma air purifiers are safe for the public health or not. Again, I am not giving up hope on these systems. If proven, the technology would be far too superior than any. But we don't know it that well yet. Sorry I didn't talk about HEPA filters a lot.  They are basically far more standardized air filtration units, properly tested in laboratories for the prescribed removal of particulates.  The main drawbacks are high energy consumption and maintenance/replacement/disposal costs.
Other than that, they're great at what they are built to do. Written If you are looking for an air purifier to remove particulates like pollen, dust and mold from the air then you would be much better off with a HEPA filter air purifier.   HEPA filters are designed to remove nearly 100% of airborne particulates and no other technology comes close to this level of performance.Ionic air purifiers are pretty worthless as an allergy or dust air purifier.  They can be good for odor removal.  This is largely from the result of ozone production.  Ozone is what hotels use to shock a room to remove an odor like cigarette smoke however ozone is terrible for your lungs.  Ionic air purifiers were very popular nearly 20 years ago when Sharper Image Ionic Breeze was sold through infomercials, catalogs and retail stores.  Most air purifiers sold were ionic since the idea of a filterless air purifier was very compelling.  After independent testing showed almost no benefit to the air quality, the Ionic Breeze market imploded.
Since then ozone standards have been enacted for air purifiers and in the past five to ten years the market has shifted largely to HEPA filter air purifiers.  This is better for your health and produces the best indoor air quality. We have written extensively about the question of ionic air purifiers versus HEPA air purifiers. In general, with air purifiers you get what you pay for.air purifier good for hazeWritten The truth is Ionic air purifiers are virtually useless. air purifier reviews formaldehydeInstead of relying on fans to move air through filters they release a steady stream of negatively charged ions that electrify the bits of dust, dander etc. air duct cleaning burlington wi(In many cases, they also become attracted to other charged surfaces such as walls, table tops and TV screens.): Also in varying degrees, all ionic air purifiers release ozone, which is not only a potential pollutant but a lung irritant as well.
People who use several units at a time are especially likely to get an ozone overload. There are also recent studies which suggest that Formaldehyde which is also released in small traces from ionizers is linked to cancer. So ionic air purifiers are a big no no .HEPA air purifiers are a better choice and these days in addition to HEPA air filter there are e2f filters like the one employed in this Air Purifier . Though this type is slightly more expensive than ionizers and need replacement filters they actually do the job of cleaning the air and improve indoor air quality.Updated Yes and no!An ionic air purifier works by sending out ions into the air that attach to toxins and cause them to fall to the floor. This is cheap technology. But, you have to do regular vacuuming and sweeping to actually remove the toxins from your house.A HEPA filter actually sucks the particles into the filter and traps them there. No toxins are left in the room. However, it costs more to replace the filter every few months.
It is also important to know that ionic air purifiers can irritate asthma sufferers due to the ions they emit. Try it out first and see if this is the case for you.
