asthma & allergy friendly™ Certification Program Many products promise to help control allergens. But some products make false or exaggerated claims. This makes it hard for consumers to know the best products to buy. AAFA joined with Allergy Standards Limited to create the asthma & allergy friendly™ Certification Program. This program helps patients to understand product claims and make informed purchases. We test household products against strict standards. If products pass our tests, they earn the asthma & allergy friendly™ Certification Mark.  When you see this Mark, you know the product is proven to be better suited for those with asthma and allergies. Look for this Mark! How Do I Find asthma & allergy friendly™ Certified Products? Visit asthma & allergy friendly™ to find a list of Certified products, including: What Standards Do You Use to Certify Products? An independent medical panel helps us decide the ideals a product must meet to be Certified.
We test products based on their approved standards. Visit the asthma & allergy friendly™ Certification Program site for more details on the standards for each product type.Only the asthma & allergy friendly™ Certification Standard ASP-08-03/101 for HVAC/ furnace filters is specifically designed to address allergen related capture regardless of the particle size at which it is found. The asthma & allergy friendly™ Certification Mark is awarded only to those media based HVAC/furnace filter products that can be scientifically demonstrated, when in use, to capture specified levels of various sized allergen-bearing particles as determined by airborne measurements pre and post filtration at levels as follows: Timothy Grass Pollen (Phl p 5) (12 – 100 μm) House Dust Mite (HDM) Allergen (Der p 1) (3 – 20 μm) Cat Allergen (Fel d 1) (1 – 20 μm) Micro Particles (0.3 – 1.0 μm) *In selecting these particular allergens, it is recognized that cat allergen (Fel d 1) associated particles are equivalent in size to those of dog and rodent dander, Timothy grass pollen (Phl p 5) is equivalent in size to other pollens (ragweed, trees etc.) and HDM allergen (Der p 1) is equivalent in size to mold spores and cockroach allergen.
The use of Certified HVAC/furnace filters does not replace source control in an overall allergy action plan. Optimal indoor air quality represents a central aspect of the management of asthma and allergic diseases and as such a Certified HVAC/furnace filter is likely to contribute to such optimization. The rating system currently employed by the HVAC/Furnace Filter Industry, termed MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Values), addresses the ability of a filter to capture particles of predetermined size. The dust utilized is ASHRAE Test Dust, a blend of 72% standardized fine test dust (sometimes referred to as Arizona Road Dust), 23% powdered carbon and 5% milled cotton linters, and potassium chloride (KCl). Unfortunately such assessments do not adequately address the fact that allergen associated particles and size vary greatly between specific allergens and for specific allergens.  For example dust mite associated allergens can vary between 5 and 20 μm with cat allergen can be found in particles as small as 0.5 μm and up to 3 μm and above.

Shop All Asthma Air Purifiers Loss of breath, dizziness, wheezing, and coughing are a few of the symptoms of an asthma attack and can be very frightening for a sufferer. Asthma is a common respiratory condition in adults and children that can be passed on genetically or developed throughout life.
An asthma attack occurs when a sufferer's airways to the lungs become narrowed and inflamed. This inflammation of the airways is what causes the shortness of breath and can even cause excess mucous to be produced in the airways, making the attack more severe. The main triggers of an asthma attack include particles such as pollen and dust, as well as chemicals like paint fumes and tobacco smoke. Since most indoor air contaminants can cause an asthma sufferer to experience an attack, clean and fresh indoor air is very important in the homes of those who suffer from asthma. Ideally, the first step to managing asthma symptoms is to remove any sources of indoor pollutants from your home. Then, it is paramount to invest in air purifiers for the home that are effective at eliminating not only particles, but also odors and fumes. Even mild asthma sufferers also need air purifiers present in their everyday environments in order to avoid asthma attacks. Air purifiers are a necessity for households with family members who suffer from asthma.
In order to avoid scary or even fatal asthma attacks, the particulate matter and chemicals that cause these reactions must be eliminated from the air. Whether you live with a person who suffers from severe or mild asthma, air purifiers may be the best health and home solution to pursue. Severe asthma attacks can require hospital treatment, and at worst, be fatal. It is critical for a severe asthma sufferer to keep his or her home free of particles and fumes that may trigger an asthma attack. The AllerAir 5000 Exec and the Austin Air Healthmate Plus are two air purifiers ideal for asthma or severe allergy sufferers with chemical reactivity. The AllerAir Exec series not only contains a powerful HEPA filter to remove particulate matter from the air, but also employs activated carbon to remove any odors, gases, or chemicals that may be present. The Austin Air Healthmate Plus air purifier are great systems for controlling asthma symptoms, as well, equipped with a HEPA filtering system and activated carbon.
