The Indian capital’s pollution levels damage residents’ lungs, vex commuters and spook fitness freaks. But one group is breathing easier amid the toxicity: air-purifier makers. Japan’s Sharp, Netherland’s Koninklijke Philips N.V. and Sweden’s Blueair AB sold more air purifiers in India last year than ever before, as tens of thousands of new customers snapped up the big, boxy appliances in a bid to clean the atmosphere in their homes. Sharp sold a record 19,930 such machines in India in 2015, about three times more than it sold a year earlier. Philips’ air purifier sales tripled last year, too, while Blueair sold five times more purifiers in 2015 compared with a year earlier. Delhiites led the pack, accounting for the most sales in 2015, according to the three companies. “For years we’ve said Delhiites are breathing toxic. Nobody believed us,” said Vijay Kannan, Blueair’s India head.

China’s Smart Air Filters Pvt. Ltd., for example, sells a box fan and a separate fiber glass filter, which it says customers can strap together to create their own purifiers. Smart Air’s do-it-yourself filters are available for 3,399 rupees — a fraction of the cost of conventional models on the market. A filter, a fan and a strap is all you need to combat pollution indoors, according to one company. This rudimentary invention is making “air purifiers no longer a luxury for the rich,” said Jay Kannaiyan, Smart Air’s India boss. Air pollution masks are flying off store shelves too. California-based Vogmask typically sold 40 masks a day when it launched in India in Dec. 2014. Now, its two stores in New Delhi sell “hundreds a day,” according to Sonam Khanna, who manages them here. Masks sell for between 1,800 rupees to 2,200 rupees. Indian e-commerce sites say cheaper, locally-manufactured masks are also selling well online. says it doubled its air mask vendors in 2015. On a recent evening in New Delhi, customers crammed into Vogmask’s store in Khan Market. Suchitra Mallik, a 34-year-old housewife, settled for a double-valve mask after much deliberation. “Finally, I can breathe,” she declared as she strapped on the neon-colored accessory. Then, she went out into the capital’s traffic-snarled streets and disappeared into the smog.
