As cat parents we’re convinced our homes smell like clean laundry, Let me  be real with you. The reality of the situation is likely something more like this: Don’t fret, all is not lost,  though you’re going to need to find another use for all those plug-ins you purchased at Costco. The folks at CritterZone Air Naturalizer get it. As they say on their website, “We’ve all been there: You walk into the home of a pet owner, and you immediately notice that unmistakable “cat smell” in the air…It may be a litter box that’s overdue for a change, or a result of ‘accidents’ on the carpet. Whatever the cause, no one wants their house to have a “cat smell.” DING DING DING DING! I have two CritterZone units – one next to each litter box – and they are truly magical! The CritterZone comes in a wall mounted unit (you just plug it into a wall outlet), or a corded unit that can be plugged in and placed further away from a power source for harder to reach places (like the litter box I have behind a door where the cats go in-and-out through a hole – that small room doesn’t have an outlet).

How does it work? I’ll let CritterZone do the talking on that one! “The CritterZone isn’t an ozone generator OR an ionizer. Those active ingredients start creating chemical reactions and breaking down contaminants.” It’s weird because you do notice a slight oxygen-like smell when you first use the unit. Again, that’s just a sign that your unit is doing what it should be and like anything else in your home, requires an occasional cleaning. However, thanks to Mother Nature and the mother of all pollen seasons, the AirGenius5 from Kaz USA was working overtime, and it did just fine.  If you think this is an endorsement of the product, you might be surprised.  What I needed at my home was a device that would help with pollen accumulation that was causing runny noses.  I suppose we could have air-conditioned the whole house, but that was a little beyond my budget.  An air cleaner seemed to be the best option, so reviewing the AirGenius5 seemed like a good idea. novita air purifier true hepaThe top of the unit has touch controls for the functions.  honeywell hepa air cleaner 10500These were hit or miss for activation.  alen t300 tower air purifier reviews

The 5 “purification” levels simply run the fan at incrementally increasing speeds, pushing air through the permanent filter.  The air coming out of the cleaner is passed through an ionized field.  Touching the oscillate button rotates the air cleaner about 15 degrees side to side on the base. The heart of the device is a permanent washable HEPA filter.  This is augmented by a foam insert in the back cover which can be replaced with a charcoal impregnated pre-filter.  The pre-filter is claimed to remove odors, but I didn’t notice any difference between the two.  Then again, my house doesn’t stink 🙂 The above shot shows the unit with full ambient lighting.  I suppose there are individuals that need their air cleaner to have adjustable lighting.  It doesn’t add anything to make the device work any better, cheaper or faster. Because of communication issues with the supplier of the device, I had two months of use before I could write a review.  We really put it to the test.  T

his year in New Hampshire, we have suffered one of the most intense tree pollen seasons ever.  This is the yellow stuff that comes from pine trees.  It leaves layers on the cars, driveways and any horizontal surface in the house.  It was in full swing about a week before the AirGenius5 arrived. Before we fired up the air cleaner, we did a fairly deep cleaning of the house, especially the surfaces that attracted the pollen.  Normally it was only a day or two before the dust was noticeable.  After running the AirGenius5 for over a week, we noticed there was hardly any visible dust/pollen on the horizontal surfaces.  What was more surprising is that the unit is only rated to work for a room size of 100-300 sq ft and we were using it in an area of  over 500 sq ft.  We did take the advice given in the manual to run it 24/7, which begs the question: why is there a timer? The unit runs quietly, even at the highest setting, which is what we leave it at.  Although the filter indicator on the panel was only 3/5 lit, we decided to clean the permanent filter.  T

his was accomplished by running it under the faucet until the water came out clear and then letting it completely dry in the sun.  The odor filter can’t be cleaned.  It has to be replaced. Our in-house critic, my wife, gives the AirGenius5 a thumbs up, but I have a couple of reservations about this device.  Firstly, although it is called the Honeywell AirGenius5, the only thing Honeywell provided this product was their name.  It’s imported by Kaz USA and the name is licensed.  I realize this is a common practice, but I think it would be less deceptive if the device was named the Great Wall Genius, or something of the like.  Secondly, today this is a single source product.  It’s only available from Target.  This makes it hard to price shop and you might end up with an orphan product if Target gets tired of selling it. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because no matter where I plug the wall unit in, it blocks the out let above or below it from using any other 3 prong plug in like vacuum cleaner... other wise I love it. It does a great job with my litterboxes, but not such a great job with the (pet) rats, not sure why that would be. I don't notice the smell others reported on other sites that strongly and I'm a fairly sensitive person with asthma and reactive airways. Great product and will recommend to friends!

Posted by Olivia on 23rd Jul 2015 I cannot express enough how much I absolutely love this product!! My roommate brought home a male cat that had not been neutered. His urine had the most rancid smell. Finally, I did some research and decided to buy this little machine in hopes that it would help. I get home, open the door and NOTHING! It smells like clean air. Sort of like when you walk outside after a thunderstorm and the air is crisp and clean. I would recommend this to anyone who has any smells they are trying to get rid of. THIS IS MIRACLE WORK! It was like I had opened the windows on a nice spring day. I do, however, like the corded model better because of the flexibility. The wall unit does take up the entire wall outlet so you can't use it but for only that purpose. That is the only reason I gave it 4 stars.

Posted by Callie on 4th Nov 2014 I have been searching for something- ANYTHING - to help with the smell in my condo from having 10 cats. I saw the review for this and thought - why not - I can't lose with the 30 days return policy. I received my unit a couple of weeks ago and plugged it in immediately, (I love gadgets almost as much as cats). I really, really did not think anything would ever be able to help with the odor in my condo - but lucky for me I was wrong! This unit is amazing. When I came down the stairs the next morning - there was no odor. When my kids came down that morning, I asked them kinda casually what they smelled - they said "Nothing..." I got a huge smile on my face and said, " I KNOW...There's no litter box smell at all!" I did clean my unit for the first time yesterday, because I was starting to notice odor again - after a quick clean (as per the instructions) I plugged it back in and we're back to being odor free again. All I can say is this product is amazing - I am so glad I tried it, and I plan to order another unit for the upstairs.

This works great, after a day or so, couldn't smell it anymore. It does have a bleachy smell to it, but its better than the alternative. Unfortunately, it does also seem to absorb the nice smell from my wax warmer that I was trying to use to cover up the bleachy smell. I noticed that the odor began being neutralized almost immediately, and the air smelled fresher and cleaner. I plan on keeping this in their room.
