Emerson Call for Innovation MICROPHONE AIR FLOW SENSOR This is an idea for a way to measure total system airflow across any type of indoor ducted system. This idea uses currently available smart phone applications that are used for measuring wind speed. The smart phone apps are capable of converting sound levels of the microphone (caused by moving air) into wind speed readings. I am not the creator of these applications, but in this idea I will explain how the currently available applications could be used as a tool to quickly measure total system airflow of ducted systems. The technician would simply download the application used to measure air speed through the smart phones microphone. The technician would hold the smartphone in the path of flowing air at the registers. Since the apps are mostly used for wind speed the technician would need to convert the reading given from miles per hour to feet per minute using simple math. The technician would then multiply the fpm reading by the ducts cross sectional area to find the cfm flow rate per register.
The technician could quickly take a reading at each of the system's registers, do the calculations for each to find each register's cfm, and then combine the cfm totals giving the total system flow rate in cfm.The smartphone applications that are used for measuring wind speed are probably the lowest cost and are possibly even free. In the future an HVAC cfm app could be developed or even a device that could instantly calculate cfm internally and would be extremely easy to use.It would have a microphone for sensing air speed and duct size selector to be able to calculate cfm of a variety of duct sizes. One of the benefits of this idea is that a technician could quickly take a reading at each of the systems registers without having to set up any equipment at all. The idea could be easily tested by searching for and downloading a wind speed application, and then testing this idea on a system with known cfm to verify that it is within the +/- 7 % threshold.
