November 7, 2010 Subscribe Are standalone Heater-Fans/Oil-Filled heaters more efficient (electricity wise) than electric baseboards? First time paying for electricity in an apartment with electric baseboards. Are standalone heat fans or oil filled heaters more efficient at heating over the standard electric baseboards? Also, I got a small air mover during the summer as a fan/air-conditioner dispersant. It says on the box that it's good for aiming at heat sources to more efficiently heat a room - is that true? It seems to make my AC cool the room faster, and since the heater is drawing the same amount of wattage whether it's being blown on or not, would it help heat the apartment more efficiently or does any evaporation/moving-air discount any savings in electricity? Commercial Air Conditioning Units: The other day I was at a mall that was hot inside, it seemed a bit unusual because malls like to keep the temperature very cool for the customers enjoyment. On this hot muggy day on the east coast this was not my idea of shopping, we also heard complaints from other shoppers about the heat inside the building. Just like we left the mall and went some where else, we are sure many other customers did the same. Cool Weather & Your Heater: I was sure surprised when I realized there was no filters in the air ducts of a house I moved into, the house was not more than 5 years old. I unscrewed the vent cover, there was no way to open it like a normal vent cover. I then had to shove the filter in the opening, this caused the filter to get sucked up when the a/c unit was on, it also made a new noise I never heard before. These air ducts were clearly not designed to have a filter at the intake source. Finally I found the filters inside the furnace unit in the attic. What a disaster, imagine all the dust and dirt in the ducts simply because there in no filter at the beginning of the duct. Warm Weather Time To Change The Filters: With the warm weather it is time to think about cleaning your air duct filters and think about servicing your HVAC unit. A trained licensed heating and cooling technician will come out and test your system to see if there are any problems. Preparation Is Key When It Comes To HVAC The HVAC is something that needs to be maintained from time to time. An improperly or inefficiently functioning HVAC system wastes a lot of homeowner money. The following article has information you need to help keep your system running great. When a contractor gives you a list of references, be sure to make use of it. Call the people on the list and ask about the quality of the work, how closely they came to their quote and whether or not the work was completed according to the promised timeline.

Look for discounts wherever possible. HVAC systems can be rather costly, so you’ll want to seek out whatever discounts and deals that may be out there. When shopping around, ask about any current specials running, and look for discounts that are related to ENERGY STAR compliance. Both can save you a lot of cash. Before you hire anyone to do any work on your HVAC, be sure to get a written estimate which has itemized costs listed on it. This will ensure that comparing one contractor to another will be simple as you can see what one offers that another doesn’t, or what price they’re charging for the same items. Make sure you ask for an estimate in writing before choosing a specific HVAC vendor. There are a lot of moving pieces when it comes to purchasing these big items. You’ll want to compare not only the cost of the equipment, but also the set up and the overall energy costs. Before you choose someone to do HVAC work, figure out what they need to do for you. You might not be able to get a price quote unless you let the contractor see your current system first.
