It actually worked better after I got a different filter for it. If you were looking for a cheaper and better air filter, I was able to use the Nordic Pure, Merv 10 filter. The air flow is the same as the previous filter, but for some reason the room smelled and air felt cleaner after the new filter. It could be that I went 6 months and the air quality deteriorated with the old filter, but my wife insists that its working better than it did. I noticed someone had put its a 350 and that is incorrect. Life saver for allergy and athsma sufferers. I can see where some may rattle because the back comes off to clean filter and when you put it back on, when turned on high, some may vibrate enough to make a rattle between the plastics - easy remedy though... we just took a small piece of clear tape and taped one side ... rattle solved. For $99 bucks and NO FILTER TO REPLACE... you can't beat it. The CADR ratings are good too. (according to my research they are as good as you will get for this size and price) As for the smell... lots of new things come with a smell... we just stuck it in our biggest room, let it run for 24 hours and then the smell was gone. Perfect things do not exist.... I'm usually pretty picky and don't spend money carelessly, but I don't expect perfection from anything and I think this is a great product. I bought this and placed it in the kitchen where the smell seems to be coming in. I have to keep it on the high setting for it to be effective and it definitely is loud, but I don't mind it. I'm going to buy another one and place it in the living room and hopefully a combination of the two will resolve the situation.

It probably filters dust and lint, maybe pollen, but doesn't filter smoke, odor, and whatever else the filter is not capable of filtering. The filter doesn't look like it will last. Cleaning would be difficult. It's not true HEPA but i didn't care for that when i bought it. For me medium speed was quiet enough, high speed is too loud, slow speed is useless. It blows air like a fan, just not as strong as a dedicated fan. It emitted annoying plastic odor which i didn't like. I would not be able to make my own cheap filter or find a generic replacement. It's expensive for what it does. This "purifier" would be ok if it had a permanent washable filter which never needs replacement. This is the perfect solution. People, you can turn the UV light off. Its a clearly labeled button on the top of the unit. The complaints about this make me shake my giggle. I make bath bombs. If you don't know what those are, they consist of fine powder compressed into a mold that you drop into a bath. It involves triple sifting baking soda, citric acid and cornstarch-there is dust absolutely EVERYWHERE! I bought this system specifically for that. Almost immediately I could feel the floors didn't have that dusty layer under my feet. I usually have to run the vacuum several times a day as I make many batches of bath bombs a day. I have an epileptic cat and I don't want to have any irritants in the air. Not sure if that is a trigger for him, but it was always on my mind. This sucks the particles right in as I sift through the fine powders. Also acts as a cooling fan that isn't shooting straight down on my head from the ceiling. This is perfect for Houston! Completely silent on low and medium, but I keep it on high.
