We are advised to stay indoors when the air quality index reaches unhealthy levels. But how do we ensure that the air indoors is clean? An air purifier does the work. What is the best filter?HEPA filters are probably the most popular filters in the market. HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Absolute, and all HEPA filters are designed to pass the stringent requirements of removing 99.97 percent of airborne particles that are 0.3 microns in diameter.

HEPA filters remove dust, dust mites, allergens, pollens, plant spores, fungi spores, mold spores, and larger tobacco smoke particles.HEPA filters do not remove most odours, gases, volatile compounds like paint smells, microorganisms like viruses and bacteria, and any particles that are smaller than 0.01 micrometers. Some tips when buying a HEPA filter air purifier:1.

Some air purifiers uses filters that does not pass the HEPA requirements but marketed it with the “HEPA” term, so do take note!3. As HEPA filters do not remove some particles and odours, it is good to get one that comes with carbon filter, anti-bacteria filter, and germicidal filter, depending on your needs.Do I need a very high-end air purifier? It depends on your room size. Do you plan to install the air purifier in a bedroom or in the living room? The living room will require an air purifier with a larger capacity.A medium range air purifier that has capacity to purifier air for a 30 square meter (322 square feet) room will most likely be suitable for a typical HDB flat bedroom. Some tips when choosing an air purifier:1. If you need your air purifier to be portable so that you can move it to different rooms, you can choose one that is lightweight and has castor wheels.2. Do note that the higher capacity air purifiers can also be bulkier and nosier. If you need the air purifier to be less noisy, say, silent enough to be switched on through the night, noise level will be an important factor, too!

Do I need the ionizer and ozone function? The ionizer function of the air purifier acts as an active air-purifying component. The ions produced by the air purifier attach themselves to airborne particles, and remove them from the air. An air purifier that has this function does not only passively clean the air that goes through it; it also generates ions that clean the air outside. An air purifier that produces ozone can remove living micro-organisms like mold, mildew, and bacteria. It will also remove bad odours and gases. However, high levels of ozone can also be harmful to health. The United States Environmental Protection Agency states, “When inhaled, ozone can damage the lungs.” It can cause discomforts to the respiratory tracts. If you want to choose an air purifier with ozone, do check that the machine has built-in safety factors. Here are some air purifiers to keep your indoor air clean:With Dual HEPA and NANO filtration, the Europace 5 Stage Air Purifier - EPU 92A, $499, removes 96.5% of airborne bacteria, and 100% of respirable suspended particles (smoke/haze).

Water leaving the treatment plants may be clean, but we worry about old pipes delivering the water to us, as well as the state of storage tanks.

Since we had some renovation at home, we also installed a filtration system. We’ve got Hydroflux’s under-sink filtration system. They do have another system that is installed on table top, dispenses hot and cold water, and requires electricity to operate. The under-sink system is purely passive, and it comes with a separate tap to dispense filtered water. The system has a four stage filter that treats water in the following sequence: A 5 micron sediment filter removes sediments such as rust particles, sand, dust and other impurities in the water. A UF (ultra filtration) filter uses membranes with pore size of 0.01 micron to remove 99.99% bacteria. A nano silver activated carbon filter removes organic chemical substances such as chlorine, taste, odour and other impurities. Nano silver inhibits the growth of bacteria. The final alkaline antioxidant filter increases the pH of the water. It also decreases the size of water molecule clusters by 50% to improve hydration.
