Mentor germ firm capturing a healthy dose of business Guardian Technologies sees sales growth amid rising health awareness A new flu strain has helped boost business at Guardian Technologies, a Mentor company that sells health-related appliances under the name Germ Guardian. Since the company started in 2005, it has been building brand awareness, said managing partner Rick Farone, and it now sells more than two dozen products that target contagions in the home. The company has grown to almost $20 million in revenues from its sales of air sanitizers, purifiers, humidifiers and vacuum cleaners, Mr. Farone said. “Swine flu has helped, but there's a strong general growth and awareness of people to try to stay healthy beyond swine flu,” Mr. Farone said. “We've had consistent growth.” The 10-person company currently is led by managing partners Mr. Farone and David Brickner, both of whom previously worked for Dirt Devil manufacturer Royal Appliance Manufacturing Co. Mr. Farone had been executive vice president of sales, marketing and product development, and Mr. Brickner was executive vice president of operations and engineering.

Also involved with the company is Joe Gorman, retired chairman and CEO of TRW Inc., who acquired the ultraviolet light technology used in the company's air purifiers. All of Germ Guardian's products are somehow health related, but some use UV light technology to kill germs on surfaces and in the air. The products are sold on the company's web site and at large retailers such Target and Lowe's. Chris Keller, a spokeswoman for the company, said UV-C light, a type of ultraviolet light used in the products, penetrates the cell walls of organisms and scrambles their DNA, sterilizing and killing them. The technology is used for bad cases of MRSA, a particularly resistant staph infection, when drugs don't work. Ms. Keller said in an e-mail that all of the company's products are tested by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. or the Canadian Standards Association for safety. She said UV-C exposure is not dangerous for humans because of the thickness of skin and that all products have safety features.

“We're very aware of safety issues,” Ms. Keller said. Mr. Farone said demand for the products keeps growing. Traffic to the company's web site is “up significantly,” he said, and he thinks that traffic will extend past the flu season and into everyday sales. “I think it will translate,” he said. “I don't see why it wouldn't continue.” Building on the market Mr. Farone said the company always has been bullish about its business and is hoping to expand into more products. One of the firm's products is a wand with a UV-C light bulb that kills micro-organisms when they make contact with the light. It can be used to sterilize items such as keyboards, cell phones and remote controls, though Mr. Farone is quick to add that the tool only works until the next time any of those items are contaminated. There are four or five Germ Guardian products that make up the lion's share of the company's business, Mr. Farone said, with the tabletop air purifier and a digital humidifier being among the most popular.

The company is in the process of introducing a larger UV-C air purifier, for use in larger rooms, and a touchless soap dispenser. Mr. Farone said the company has made sure its name comes up a lot in searches for items ranging from healthy products to swine flu to ensure that awareness of Germ Guardian continues to grow. That has helped with sales, he said. “Our goals and plans are to keep growing it organically, with some additional retail distribution and placement,” he said. Germ Guardian also has been more aggressively seeking retail partners, Mr. Farone said, a strategy that has paid off when combined with worries about flu season this year. Dave Covell, deputy director for the Cuyahoga County Board of Health, said he has heard of UV light being used to sanitize pools and septic tanks in the past, but that he cannot speak to the effectiveness of any specific product, including those manufactured by Germ Guardian. Mr. Covell said he hasn't heard anything about the technology's effect on viruses, but that doesn't mean it's not effective.
