You need to use it in conjunction with the Holmes HAPF30DPDQ-U 2- Pack Hepa-Type filters for Holmes® and Bionaire® Air Cleaners in order to collect the finer particles like allergens, dander and pollen. They will do nothing for cleaning or purifying the air by themselves. They can be washed and reused, but the Hepa-Type filters are absolutely necessary. Hepa-filters need to be replaced every several months depending on use. I have a HAP240 and a similar HAP2400B, and it doesn't actually fit either one. That is, it goes inside the space for the filter - with too much room to spare. In the HAP240, there's an extra 1/4" not covered by the filter, so in that area, the air will simply go through the machine without being filtered. In the HAP2400B, there's a full inch of space not covered. So part of the air is filtered, and part of it is not. I've added an inch of wooden bits below the filter in the HAP2400B to make the filter fit better so more of the air will go _through_ the filter and not _around_ it. I'll add 1/4" wood piece in the other filter. But this isn't the best solution -- a filter that actually fits would be MUCH better! The Holmes replacement filters that WalMart used to carry did fit. The air purifier and its filter works as advertised -- mine is in a small room near my desk and it captures dust as well as reducing pet odors. It is very simple to replace; press the two tabs on the purifier, snap off the front cover, shake out the interior foam sheet, remove the old filter, snap in the new one, and replace the foam sheet and purifier cover. I am very satisfied with its performance and ease of use, and if this air purifier ever fails, I will purchase another.
