The house smelled weird and there may be mold in this old house. There are two smokers, who smoke outside but seem to bring the smell inside everytime they open the door. So, I put it in the living room close to the door. I turn it on several hours a day and to me it seems that the bad smell has decreased tremendously! Yes, it is a bit loud but I could deal with it if it helps, plus there are 3 volum settings. I don't have allergies but I think it works great. The light that is suppose to say if a new filter is needed came on a few days later, but the filter wasn't black or anything, and the light doesn't stay on all the time so, I have yet to change the filter. HATE the constant dirt. Decided to try an air cleaner. Should have thought about it years ago, but have one on furnace. This works so well we could tell a difference in 2 hours, even thou it is basically a fan with a filter. Keep it on high all the time. Bought it 2 weeks ago and need to change filters already. would buy a new filter everyday if house got clean. Bought a 2nd one for another area in house. Easy to clean pre-filter. like it being tall so does'nt take much floor space. Daughter came home after being gone for a month and can't believe difference. It still worked, but with little black plastic pieces coming out of it, I was afraid to keep it. So I returned the item to the store and I found another air purifier on the website that was less expensive. The Hamilton Beach 04383 was almost $20.00 less and comes with a permanent filter that you can clean and reuse. The Holmes air purifier requires 2 filters that have to be replaced in about 4 months.
