We're traveling in from the east (Chicago) and are considering different routes. I know the basics of mountain driving (take it slow, don't ride the brakes, downshit) but don't have any experience.

My original plan was to take US-14 through the Big Horns on the way to Cody, WY before heading into Yellowstone from the east. I'm a bit worried about steep grades and drop offs since I'm not experienced driving in the mountains. Would it be better to use US-16 through the Big Horns as I've heard its easier? Or is it better to just avoid the range entirely and take the extra time to head into Yellowstone through the north? 3 places mentioned in this post Ranked of 600 things to do in Wyoming The drive over the Big Horns is beautiful, and I wouldn't suggest that you divert north to avoid them. You should do ok if you take it slow. Taking route 16 down the west side of the range is easier to drive than 14; and don't even think about taking 14A (which can be a white-knuckle experience going down the west side when being pushed by a horse trailer). Google maps says the drive over the Big Horns on 14 is just over an hour, but I'm not sure what to expect on these roads as far as speed limits so I don't know if that's accurate.

Should I expect to average 30mph? I was also surprised that you said the west-side was the harder part because looking Google Earth it looks like the steepest grades are on the east side of the range. The east side of the Big Horns is real steep, too, but you'll be driving UP the east side, and generally driving up a steep mountain road isn't quite as thrilling as driving down. Driving up hill, there's no sense of losing control over the car (or a truck, trailer and 4,000 pounds of horses, as the case may be) because you'll slow really fast if you take your foot off the gas. So I think you'll discover that, if you have any issues, they're more likely to occur while driving down the west side, where gravity can make things truly interesting. As far as speed goes, the road up the east side has a lot of switchbacks, so that's real slow driving. Then the range flattens out at the top for a long ways, where you can make 50 to 60. Then you start tilting down the west side, where I'd guess you'll average 30 or so, and much slower in places.

There are plenty of pullouts on the west side where you can stop and look out over the Big Horn Basin, which stretches west, and is virtually empty (like much of Wyoming), all the way across to Cody. The mountains you'll see in the western distance are the Absarokas, which form the eastern boundary of Yellowstone. So go for it. After all, what's the fun of being a guy if you don't do dangerous things? When you take 14 east (or even consider taking14A east), stop a few times to look back west and take in the views. 14A is particularly beautiful. While I'd recommend it going east, I'd not suggest that you take 14A going west.

Driving up 14A out of the Big Horn Basin is ok, but going down 14A can be nerve-wracking. Edited: 11:07 pm, January 17, 2013 Since we'll be coming into Yellowstone from the East, how does the drive up East Entrance road to the Sylvan Pass and finally Yellowstone Lake compare to the drive through the Big Horns? If it's roughly comparable in difficulty to taking US-14 then I might consider taking US-14 for the added scenery. I'm not worried about ascending in to Yellowstone so much as I am about descending this road as I hear it's quite narrow and winding. That entrance road into Yellowstone gets a huge amount of tourist traffic. I've never thought the part over Sylvan Pass was much of a problem driving in either direction. It certainly doesn't compare with driving over the Big Horns and coming down 14A. I'd say it's also easier driving than coming down 14 in the Big Horns, since 14 does wind its way down the narrow side of a canyon wall as it makes its way to the floor of the Basin.
