That’s when the PM2.5 particles hit an all-time high. Delhi’s air pollution has consequences for everyone, and while concrete policies to tackle this might be missing, the air purifier business is booming. Philips has launched quite a few models in India, and the latest one is the 3000 series Air cleaner. I’ve been using a Philips Air Purifier AC4025 model in my home for the last one year, which is not as fancy as the one I got for review. It doesn’t tell the PM2.5 filtered, although you can see how dirty the air we are breathing is when we do the bi-weekly cleaning of the front filter. The Philips 3000 series, which has the model number AC3256, is a much more expensive version that shows the PM2.5 levels and costs Rs 32,995.

Amazon appears to have some discounts though, and you can get it for Rs 26,000. But is this price tag worth it? Here’s what I thought. It’s fine for a house like mine with bare minimum furniture and lots of empty space. Homes with lots of furniture might have a hard time finding enough space for this product, which is nearly 2 feet in height. It has a touch UI based panel on top where you can apply various modes from A which is for allergy special, to the fan speeds (1-5), the PM2.5 level indicator, timer and the child lock mode. The Air purifier has an interesting design, with round light sensor for air quality placed below the panel. This changes colour according to air quality, though for some reason it stayed mostly blue in our house. Most people buy Air Purifiers to know, or at least get this feeling, that at some point during the day they are breathing a bit of clean air. With the A3000 series, you get to know the exact PM2.5 levels and also how soon the filter is reducing them.

During the review period we used this is in our bedroom, and TV/living room, with levels of PM2.5 being mostly between 100-150, if I go with the maximum range. This is definitely a powerful filter as it would bring the range down quickly, often in less than half hour to under 30, which is closer to acceptable range. With the A3000 series, you get to know the exact PM2.5 levels and also how soon the filter is reducing them (Source: Philips) The Air purifier is not as noisy as I thought it would be. The fan levels are quite low and neither my husband or I found ourselves getting up to reduce the fan levels. The low fan noise in helps because you can keep this on all night without getting disturbed. Do note we had this placed further away from our bed, which was another advantage in this case. I’d say less noise gives this one an edge over the lower models as well. We could also turn off the ambient blue light at night so that was another plus point. The size of the Air Purifier means you will need ample space for this.

In my bedroom the only big piece of furniture is a bed, so yes we didn’t have any trouble keeping this one towards the foot of our bed. But keep the size in mind when considering this. Also the light sensor is distracting, even when we used the air purifier during the day, and we preferred to switch it off. With all air purifiers you need to make sure the company is supplying replacement filters, because the normal filter life is around 4-6 months. For example, on our Philips AC4025 purifier we replaced the filter within six months. In case of the new Philips A3000 series, the replacement filters are not yet available on the Philips India website, which will be an issue later on. If you’re okay with a big air purifier in your house, that also monitors the PM2.5 levels, the A3000 is a good option.
