At an Internet conference last month, Jack Ma asked Xiaomi Corp.’s Lei Jun how much making a good smartphone mattered when the air and water were so bad? Today, Lei responded by unveiling a home air purifier that sends pollution readings to mobile phones and alerts users when its filter’s dirty. In doing so, Xiaomi -- the world’s third-largest smartphone maker -- follows Ma’s Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. in offering mobile technology catered to the environmental concerns of Chinese consumers. “We are studying Ma Yun,” Lei, Xiaomi’s chief executive officer, said referring to the Alibaba founder by his Chinese name after recounting his exchange with Ma at a news conference in Beijing to announce the Mi Air Purifier. “The pollution today is very, very bad. That’s why I really believe that everyone needs this kind of product.” Air purifiers are a must-have home appliance in Beijing and elsewhere in northern China, where smog levels have rebounded after a government-ordered break in factory production during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum early last month.
Chinese President Xi Jinping said the country was making an unprecedented effort to clean up pollution. “Air purifiers are probably an easy entry point into the home for which there is high demand,” said Mark Natkin, managing director of Marbridge Consulting Ltd. in Beijing. “If Xiaomi is trying to position itself as the Apple of China it needs to turn its brand into a common household name that goes beyond smartphones and goes into other smart devices.” As Xiaomi’s press conference began at 2 p.m. the level of fine particulate matter known as PM2.5 in Beijing’s air was 388 micrograms per cubic meter, according to a monitoring station at the U.S. Embassy. That was more than 15 times the World Health Organization’s recommendation for a 24-hour exposure. The air purifier comes as Lei looks to leverage Xiaomi’s reputation for low-cost, high-performance devices and produce a wider array of consumer electronics. The four-year-old smartphone maker introduced its Mi Pad tablet in May after rolling out TVs that connect to the Internet last year and set-top boxes that can stream video in 2012.
The purifier was designed by Zhimi, which Lei said was one of 25 startups that the company had invested in. It will work with any Android device, Xiaomi said. The device will sell for 899 yuan ($145) and deliver as much as 406 cubic meters (14,000 cubic feet) of clean air an hour. “If you sell them at too expensive a price, the contribution to society isn’t that great,” Lei said. Earlier this year, Alibaba started a program to help map water quality across China to raise environmental awareness. Volunteers can measure pollutants in freshwater sources with testing kits sold for as little as 65 yuan and upload the results to a digital map via their smartphones. Xiaomi tripled its share of China’s smartphone market in the three months that ended in September to overtake Samsung Electronics Co. for the top spot, according to researcher Canalys. Expansions into India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines, helped lift Xiaomi to third place globally in the third quarter, behind Samsung and Apple Inc. with 5.6 percent of shipments, Strategy Analytics said in October.
