Written FirstSecondThirdand if the problem of her strong odor still remainsvery surevery importantUpdated Start looking for another job.If your boss is:So socially inept that she doesn't realize that her smoking in a confined space affects other people.Still smoking in an office in the 21st Century (are you in the United States?)So incompetent that she bases her evaluations of her subordinates performance on how much she likes them. Then you are working in a hostile work environment. This will affect both your health and your work performance and it's just not worth your time or your effort.Unless this is a family-owned business, I would first suggest going to Human Resources and discussing this with them. Even if they don't do anything about, your boss wil likely be looking for reasons to end your employment. If it is a family-owned firm, then begin your plans to leave. One of the dirty secrets of family-run businesses is that they need talented employees more than said employees need them.
Your leaving ( if you're indeed a talented employee) will hurt them far more than it will harm you,Either way, this is a terrible job... and no one needs a terrible job.Written One question:  is this in the United States? There are a couple of things you can do, short of quitting, straightaway.First - does she have one of those "smokeless ashtrays"?  It might be a good "gift" to the boss; and can probably run you under $10 (especially if you get it at a place like Walmart).  There are lots available online; for $15.99 (free shipping!): It's doubtful that you're the only person affected by this. You might band together with your co-workers, get contributions, and give her the ashtray or a variant to her as a gift from the team.  You are not the only one who's not enjoying the smoking.   It's another way to get across the message in Meg Walker's answer, without being specific and unique to you, and hurting you politically.  At any rate, you might be able to mention it your boss and say - hey, I'm representing the team here in asking if you could refrain from smoking - I was anointed the representative because we have such a good relationship (!!).
You could also raise the issue in a group meeting, if that's an available forum for you - prep others you trust to support you, and think about how to phrase the issue, in the best light possible. Maybe bring a gift?? (of a smokeless ashtray?)  There's strength in numbers, and good to leverage your peer relationships, if you can, to resolve this issue. If you trust HR on these things, and it's available to you, go talk with them about your situation, and let them know that it's not really a problem, but you are concerned...stay on their good side, try not to "complain" about your boss. If, for whatever reason, this doesn't seem to work and you're in the US, check out this list of smoking bans; and check to see whether it might be a good thing to file a complaint with your local state health department (or other workplace enforcement) or with OSHA.  Sometimes these can be filed anonymously.  It could, depending on the jurisdiction, result in criminal penalties and fines for the company, regardless of whether your boss is the owner or not - and is a very effective route to making it stop.
/wiki/Lis...Here's info on filing a complaint with OSHA.  Most smoking bans are locally enforced, but maybe you've got a few other issues you want to add to the list...http://www.osha.gov/as/opa/worke...Finally, because it's both an awkward situation and because any one of these suggestions could blow up and backfire on you -  do what Jon Mixon suggests, and get another gig.  Sounds like it's not worth the drama, or at least, not for longer than you need to get the experience you need to get a better gig./biogs-u...In this day and age in the US it's hard to imagine anyone smoking with impunity inside a building.  In Hawaii at the hotels you can't even smoke anywhere on the grounds.  In the US smokers have long since been made to feel like pariahs. But I would say that you need to reevaluate your situation.   How great is this job if you have a boss that is so insensitive to her employees?  What are your chances of advancement?   Maybe this is the stimulus you need to get a better job/position/career plan.
