We live in Marysville, Washington. For those of you who live in the Western Washington, we live east of the outlet malls, north of the convergent zone, and although it doesn’t rain as much as people think, it rains enough to make living with the Wet Dog Smell intolerable at times. Here is a short list of products that we use regularly that help remove the dog smell;

leaving our house smelling nice. Keeping the furniture, flooring and bedding clean is a chore that repeats up to 3 times a week. Although FeBreeze is magic against fleas – yeah, didn’t you know?  kills fleas and their eggs; tested it out eons ago and it works – I’ve been told that it’s not safe to be used regularly around pets and living with 4 dogs and 2 cats, we need a product that we can use daily. NOse Offense – this is a product that doesn’t have any odor and we spray it on the sofas, chairs, and area rugs every morning and it does a great job of removing the dog smell in the house.  And that’s not all – I use this to freshen the litter box after a cleaning, to clean the floors (just add a bit in the mop water), and to freshen our bedding where the cats nap during the day.  , and one bottle lasts for months and we have 6 pets.  Currently, we have 1 bottle upstairs, 1 downstairs, and 1 that we use for mopping the floors.  I don’t thinks we’ll have to place another order until spring.

Nature’s Miracle, Advanced Formula – because anal glands express themselves when you least expect it.  This is the one product that knocks out that smell (and ohh it’s bad) within minutes of being applied.  It doesn’t stain or discolor our furniture and days later, the smell is still gone.  I’ve also used it to save a chair from cat urine when Cosmo was trapped in a room a few years ago. Good Home Natural Laundry Detergent for Dog Bedding – we were using this natural laundry detergent at Costco that’s great for hi-capacity washers, but the dogs’ bedding and throws  never seemed to get clean unless we also used bleach, so we also use his product, because using bleach weekly on their bedding seems too harsh.   Good Home Natural Laundry Detergent is a bit on the spendy side, but a capful goes a long way and we had a bottle last us nearly 4 months. (throws are washed every weekend, dog bed covers are washed every other weekend) The dogs are limited to our first floor, which has area rugs over tile and hardwoods.  

The flooring is wet mopped and area rugs vacuumed every other day; I use NOse Offense (as shared above) to keep the floors clean. Baking Soda – we sprinkle the area rugs and bedding with baking soda and let it set while we wet mop the floors.  Although there are carpet freshners on the market that do a great job, the smell is so strong that I worry about how they impact our dogs, who are closer to the floor than we are.  Arm & Hammer baking soda is inexpensive and effective.  Read more about the uses of baking soda for pet owners. FeBreeze and Lysol are the easy go to products for air fresheners, but they won’t work for our house, because our dogs have to breath that in on a daily basis.  Here is what works for us… Rainbow RainMate – the RainMate is an air purifier that cleans the air when you use water, but is even better when you add an essential oil like lavender, orange spice, or something yummy like cookies (which I’m still looking for, they have to make it).
