1947-'54 Farmall Super A The littlest of the IH letter tractors continues to receive high marks Feature Article from Hemmings Motor News March, 2013 - Mike McNessor Glamorous Duesenbergs and Packards grabbed headlines at RM's Hershey, Pennsylvania, auction last fall (covered elsewhere in this issue), but this utility-grade collectible proved to be no slouch on the block, either. The restored 1949 Farmall Super A pictured here, with turf tires and a belly-mounted Woods mower, sold for a healthy $14,500, burying RM's $7,500-$10,000 pre-auction estimate, and surprising us as well. But don't dust off Grandpa's old tractor just yet. We're attributing the sale price of this nice example to the perfect storm of deep pockets and bidder exuberance that high-profile auctions tend to conjure up and thoroughly expect to find acres of decent As and Super As for sale in the sub $5,000 range for many years to come. The Farmall A first rolled out in 1939 and, while initially the smallest of the Farmall line (that distinction would later be passed down to the Cub), it was also the most radical looking of Raymond Loewy's famously redesigned machines.

The A sported Loewy's streamlined grille hood and tank styling, as well as his "culti-vision" concept, which moved the operator to the right of the engine. "This clear-vision feature," International boasted in its sales literature, "permits you to see all front-mounted implements at work as well as the row ahead. You can travel swiftly down the row--even a row of tiny seedlings--and do a close-up job." The Farmall A used the same powerplant as its predecessor, the F-12--an overhead-valve, 113 cu in four cylinder. There were two versions of this rugged engine available, giving buyers the option of running on either kerosene or gasoline. They were fundamentally the same powerplant, though the kerosene engine used a 5:1 compression ratio whereas the gasoline engine had a 6:1 compression ratio. Early versions of the A relied on a thermo-syphon liquid cooling system, though eventually a pressure system with a pump was implemented. An oil bath air cleaner and a magneto where standard equipment, but an electrical system with a generator, lights and starter were optional on early models.

In 1947, the Super A was unveiled with Touch Control that allowed the operator to raise and lower implements hydraulically.
