Heating, Cooling & Air Quality > Air Purifiers > Air Ionizers So I have two Ionic Breeze, this one and an older very tall one.I have the 3.0 in my office at my house and now that I use my office more often I have been using the filter... This item arrived dirty full of dust and Cobb webs in the box. After deep cleaning I turned it on and it doesn't work properly there is barely any breeze coming out of it. Bought a used one on e-Bay. Very quiet operation until it gets dirty, then it sparks and arcs when it needs cleaning. Easy to clean under the tap with soapy solution. This is an excellent product which I have purchased in the past. It collects dust, but it really doesn't do anything for my pet hair problem like I had hoped it would. ">

air duct cleaning centennialThe Sharper Image, the upscale retailer known for its air purifiers, vibrating chairs and other high-tech gadgets, has fallen on hard times.
air purifier ionizer oxygen barThe company says it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and will soon close as many as 90 stores."The company intends to continue to conduct business as usual while it devotes renewed efforts to resolve its operational and liquidity problems and develops a reorganization plan," the firm said in a statement.

The company's liquidity problem doesn't stem so much from its business model as from litigation over its heavily advertised Ionic Breeze air cleaner. The trouble began in 2003 when Consumer Reports magazine published a report claiming the expensive air cleaners don't clean air. The magazine later claimed its tests showed that Sharper Image's Ionic Breeze Quadra Silent Air Purifier and four other units also release potentially unhealthy levels of ozone.Sharper Image sued Consumer Reports for libel, but lost. Meanwhile, the company faces a class action lawsuit claiming it defrauded investors. Consumers aren't very happy either.""It was only recently I read some information that the ozone emitted from these air 'purifiers' could worsen asthma symptoms and I decided to shut mine down."My asthma had been getting progressively worse for years, and now, after only 2 days of this thing being off, I have noticed a dramatic reduction is my symptoms," she said. "I do not know yet if the damage to my lungs is permanent, but for the first time in at least a year, I can take a deep breath without coughing and I don't wake up every two hours needing to use an inhaler."

The company has experienced steadily falling sales since 2004, and has reported net losses in the last three years. In court papers, Sharper Image blamed its woes, in part, on negative publicity surrounding the Ionic Breeze.--After hearing all the rave, seeing the infomercials and advertisements, and fielding questions from our customers about The Sharper Image Design's Ionic Breeze Quadra air purifier and trying to understand how it cleans the air with minimal power consumption, we were excited to get our hands on a unit and see for ourselves how it stacked up against other air purifiers. We found it ironic that the Ionic Breeze lacked the two things customers generally have the most concern for: noise and filter replacement cost. This immediately concerned us because, in their simplest form, air purifiers are nothing more than mechanical machines that are built to cycle the air in a single room environment. The Ionic Breeze has no fan to cycle air. Most of the noise and the power consumption of our other air purifiers generates from the fan.

Simply put, you must circulate the air to clean it. The collection rods on the Ionic Breeze that are said do the heavy cleaning, fill up almost instantly. Once the surface area on the rods is full, there is nowhere for allergen and other particulate to go except back into the air. Furthermore, it came to our attention that in a recent independent test, the Ionic Breeze came in last. Our findings are concurrent with the independent test; the Ionic Breeze is extremely ineffective in reducing airborne allergen and particulate from the air in your home. Additionally, we found that Ionic Breeze produces ozone. Unlike many of our competitors, we find that ozone generators produce harmful emissions and pose a significant deterrent to air quality. If our word is not sufficient evidence of the dangers of ozone generators click here to read what the EPA has to say about ozone generators that are sold as air purifiers. While The Sharper Image dispels that the Ionic Breeze is not an ozone machine, we frown upon any machine that dispenses ANY ozone into the air you breathe.

In summary, The Sharper Image is a wonderful marketing company that does a excellent job of marketing consumer products, and in designing the Ionic Breeze, The Sharper Image did a great job of addressing the two most frequent customer concerns: noise and filter replacement cost. Unfortunately, while addressing the above concerns, they left out the two most important elements of an air purifier: a fan and a quality filter. We are very pleased that The Sharper Image has a 60 day return policy because we're definitely taking ours back, and we recommend that you do the same. If you have already purchased an Ionic Breeze, we recommend you do what hundreds of our other customers have done and return it. If you are considering purchasing a quality, room specific air purifier, do your homework and do not purchase the Ionic Breeze. Back to HEPA Air PurifiersSAN FRANCISCO — Consumer Reports magazine is taking renewed aim at a popular air purifier made by The Sharper Image two months after it fended off a libel lawsuit filed by the machine’s retailer.

The magazine reports in its latest issue hitting newsstands Tuesday that Sharper Image’s Ionic Breeze Quadra Silent Air Purifier and four other similar machines fail to significantly clean the air — but also release potentially unhealthy levels of ozone. The article is being published two months after San Francisco-based Sharper Image agreed to pay the magazine’s publisher, Consumers Union, $525,000 in legal costs after a judge dismissed its libel suit. The failed lawsuit alleged that earlier magazine articles highly critical of the Ionic Breeze’s ability to reduce airborne particles were false and malicious. Company lawyer E. Robert Wallach said Sharper Image was evaluating how to respond to the article, which advised against buying the machines. More than 2 million of the $350 units have been sold. “It is astonishing that Consumers Union would continue its misguided efforts to attack the judgment and experience of millions of Americans who are satisfied with the performance of the Ionic Breeze products,” Wallach said in a statement.
