I cannot collect rain water for them because I have no tools to do so, so the water I use to water them was the water from the drinking fountains. After coming to the school, I began watering them by soaking them upside-down in plastic containers, just like I used to do back at home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I dried them up by placing them upside-down on paper towels. When I performed this process back in Pittsburgh, they grew quite well (the only difference was that I used rainwater then). I've watered them twice after coming here, but they only turned black on their bottom leaves and didn't look healthy at all. So I have refrained from watering them for an incredible three months now, and I know you will blame me for doing this, but I was quite sure they would all turn black and die if I kept watering them.

Now, all of them have dried up considerably, but they all still have healthy leaves in the middle and their leaves have stopped turning black. I really want to resume watering them, but I don't know how. I have several varieties of tillandsias, but they all seemed to exhibit the same symptoms. I would like to know why their bottom leaves turned black and shriveled after watering, and how I can change my practices to better care for them. You can dechlorinate water by leaving it to stand for 24 hours but if the municipal authority uses chloramines instead, then you will have to use a dechlorinating solution that you can purchase from a pet shop. Rain water is naturally very soft. You can not use distilled water as that is too soft. If you use dechlorinated tap water, it may still be too hard for your plant, and the trichomes could block up dehydrating the plant by preventing uptake of any further water. Written "Air plants" are the Tillandsia genus of the bromeliad family. They're quite special, even compared to other bromeliads, because they have adapted to largely lose their root system and grow without any rooting medium.In nature, Tillandsia are "epiphytes", which means they grow off the sides/branches of trees without harming the tree at all. (An air plant growing in nature.)Orchids and some other bromeliads are also epiphytes, but these typically have a regular root system where the roots still absorb water and nutrients while helping the plant grip the tree. Tillandsia, however, only have very small roots that serve as anchors. These tiny roots do not take in water or nutrients. There is a common misconception that air plants don't require water. This is not true! If anything, they need more attentive watering than regular plants unless you keep them in humid air. They should be watered by soaking the whole thing in water for a few minutes, and this will probably have to be done every 5-7 days. In between soakings, they should be misted once or twice per day to keep the humidity up. Personally, I quickly wet the whole surface under my filtered tap every couple days as a sort of mini-soak. After wetting them, gently shake them dry a little bit; letting water sit inside the leaves will eventually cause rot. Don't use distilled water for anything as it will pull nutrients out of the plant. Try not to use chlorinated water (you can let treated tap water sit out for a day to get the chlorine out.)As for light, they prefer medium light. They should do okay in any decent window. Air plants reproduce by sprouting "pups". These are new plants that emerge near the base of the mother plant.
