why does my honeywell air purifier smell

Most of the time I don't notice it. We had a Honeywell HEPA room air purifier (basically a fan which pulls in room air through a carbon prefilter and a nested HEPA filter, traps most dust and pollen) in the kids' room for years with no problem, changing filters as necessary, but last year the room started smelling more and more like ozone whenever the purifier was on. Finally it got to the point where I'd start coughing as soon as I stepped into the room. Hoping that it was just a motor going bad, we bought two more air purifiers, from different stores -- and both of them started producing an ozone smell after a day also. Fortunately my kids aren't suffering from allergies currently so we've just turned it off. Any ideas what's going on? Pretty sure most purifiers work by creating ozone, so I don't think you can really avoid it.

There may be some type that just pull air through a filter vs doing the thing where it uses ozone to zap the dust or whatever. air duct cleaning cambridge ontarioI didn't clean it because I wanted to wait until the cleaning light came on, but it never did.

It probably should have. I noticed a lot of dust and pollen on the front of the air cleaner, which shouldn't have happened if it catches everything it says it does. I also used some incense to see if it would catch that. It didn't catch any of it. I'm hoping (for the sake of Honeywell's reputation) they sent me a defective product. It does pull a lot out of the air, but the very fine particles. We did notice that we weren't sneezing as much as before. We still had some days where we had major allergies though. We didn't notice a whole lot more particles getting vacuumed up either. We kept it in a 200 square foot room. The only other thing in the room that would make it worse for the air cleaner is our cat. We aren't allergic to the cat though. We noticed when the pollen count was high for trees, that my wife's allergies got really bad regardless of how the air cleaner was working or where it was in the room.I'm not too thrilled with this air cleaner. I would be more thrilled if the electronic filters caught a lot more than they did.

The particles seem to go right through those filters. The only one that worked good was the spongy filter. Those don't catch much though. I'm tempted to possibly return it if I can. Or just get a HEPA filter and replace the sponge filter with it...I uploaded a video to Youtube because it was too big to upload on Amazon. I didn't see anything against linking to a video review on another site in the user guidelines. So hopefully this goes through. You can find it here: youtube "dot" com/watch?v=YXxpxRn95mUIt seems that Amazon decided to take down the link to my video. I bet you can find it on you tube if you search by the name of the air cleaner and my username "Tweeber69".*Update*After running it for another month and a half, it was time to clean it. It didn't have a red light like it said it would but it just looked plain nasty. I took off the filters and found that there was dust inside it caught on the grills that are located after the IFD filters. From what the rep said to me, it sounds like the ionic filter or the IFD filters are so strong that they pull it in from the front.

I find this very hard to believe with the air flow coming out of it. Additionally, the dust would have to navigate through the fan blades (while they are moving) to get to where the dust was. My wife's allergies have been bad the last week or so. Running this air purifier hasn't done squat to help her out. The only part of this cleaning the air is the spongy pre-filter. I'm going to take that off, cut a furnace filter down to the same size and get some use out of it. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS! Quiet and powerful air purifier with no filters to replaceGets the job done - no filters to change!I bought this for odors and it really does work it's little heart out.I foster cats, so you can imagine the litter box is quite terrifying. While I love animals, I most certainly do not want my home to smell like the SPCA! I plugged this in in the basement in the same room as the litter boxes. It is actually cleaning the air! I've always been careful about the smell of cats in my house but cleaning the litter box twice a day and plug-in air fresheners still didn't take that "smell" away when you walked by the stairs to the basement.

Amazingly, I no longer catch the whiff of litter boxes when I walk by the basement steps!I read A LOT of reviews before settling on this air purifier. I didn't need something that was for a giant room and I didn't want to spend a lot of money. Especially since these purifiers tend to get mixed reviews. I didn't need one for allergies or airborne particles. I just wanted something that would cleanse the air and this works. I can't tell you if this works for allergies, but it works amazingly well on odors. And you can't tell when you walk into my house. :)Now this is NOT a quiet purifier. I don't know how anyone could sleep with this on or keep it in a public space, even on the low setting. Like having a fan on high -- even when the purifier is on low. When the purifier is on high (I keep it on medium), it's very loud. But it doesn't bounce around or make odd sounds as others have mentioned. It's just a very loud fan.I have the ionizer on. Not sure what smell people say that gives off. It seems benign to me.

I can't really tell of any difference. The nightlight is absolutely useless. I have no idea what the glow is supposed to be. It's just a green LED. It doesn't give off any sort of ambient lighting, which is a bummer since I wanted to use this to light this area of the basement for the cats, rather than leaving on a light (a low-watt, energy efficient bulb, of course).I'm very happy with this purchase. Neither I nor the cats mind the fan sound since this is in the basement where I do laundry and the cats do their business.PS -- For any cat owners looking to work on that smell, I highly recommend paper litter. Yesterday's News Original Cat Litter This is one brand that I use, but I find that the paper litter from PetSmart/Petco to be cheaper (about $10/25 lbs). Paper litter works much better than clay litter in masking smells and as bonus, it's much better for the environment and it's generally cheaper than clumping litter. Def more expensive than clay per pound, but clay is gross, smelly, and bad for the earth!
