A typical one-inch filter traps larger particles to protect the heating and cooling system but doesn't trap many of the invisible particles. 99% of airborne particles are invisible to the naked eye. Each person breathes an average of two teaspoons of dust, pollen, bacteria, pet dander, dust mites, carpet fiber and second hand smoke into their lungs each day. Electronic air cleaners or EAC's as they are commonly called feature a renewable metal filter so they can be washed as needed and rarely need replaced.
