The U.S. Justice Department wants to extradite Lopez from Spain, where he now hangs his hat, to stand trial here. But according to media reports, Lopez is suffering lingering effects of brain damage and memory loss from a 1998 auto accident, which some GM folks say was a mystery to them until this week. Lopez's physical problems and a weak extradition treaty between Spain and the United States means the chances Lopez will be returned here are slim to none, insiders say.Lopez, whose nickname was Inaki, had a reputation for treating pennies like they were gold bricks when dealing with suppliers. That endeared him to GM and made him a prize catch for VW, though among parts suppliers it led to nicknames you probably would hear only on late-night cable TV.When Lopez announced he was departing for the same position at VW, GM opened the vault to keep him from leaving. You would have thought Lopez was the world's leading engineer or designer when he not only was offered a promotion, but also about anything else at GM that wasn't bolted down, including, rumor has it, Chairman Jack Smith's wingtips.

Lopez changed his mind and said he'd stick with GM. The automaker called a news conference to announce it had won the Inaki stakes. But when Jack Smith showed up in his socks to report the news, Inaki was on a plane heading for Germany and a corner office at VW.Embarrassed, GM quickly charged Lopez with pirating plans for upcoming GM models, a new plant and even GM's supplier shopping list, complete with prices paid.It was like the chairman of Coca-Cola leaving to join Pepsi and not only taking a six-pack with him, but the secret recipe as well.GM, in a snit, sued VW. In 1996, Lopez resigned from VW and, a few weeks later, the suit was settled when VW paid GM $100 million and agreed to buy $1 billion in parts from the automaker.Inaki Lopez had become the $1 billion man. Actually the $1.1 billion man, with the $1.1 billion coming out of VW's pocket and into GM's coffers.Hmm. Lopez brought GM $1.1 billion, while it cost GM $700 million to buy back H. Ross Perot's stock in 1986 and get him off the GM board.

That means Lopez netted GM $400 million. History will show that when it comes to Lopez, on GM's books he should be listed as an asset.- Mercedes-Benz will bring out the S55 AMG super sedan for the 2001 model year, the first time Mercedes and its performance AMG division have collaborated on a top-of-the-line S-Class model.The S55 AMG will be powered by a 5.5-liter, 354-horsepower V-8 with a five-speed automatic with Touch Shift that allows the driver the choice of clutchless manual gear selection.
