San Francisco air is pretty good- not too dry, not too humid, and though there are some allergens and some pollutants, there is enough wind to spread them around. But a few things make life more difficult- cooking fumes, pet odors and allergens, and the dust that comes with living in an older building. We regularly look at air cleaning solutions, and may have found the perfect one for the city dweller. It’s wall mountable, but sexy enough to leave lying around. It’s oriented vertically, so saves space, and combines six stages of purification with true HEPA certification and still manages to be capable of handling up to 815 square feet of space. Meet the Rabbit Air MinusA2 SPA-780A. The purifier can be used in almost any room, and it comes with a removable stand in case you’re not interested in wall mounting. The wall mount kit is, unfortunately, sold separately though.

The device comes with five possible speeds, and we first tried it out using the lowest setting, which made remarkably little noise. At top speed you could hear the purifier, but it was still lower than other purifiers at their medium speeds, and a gentle consistent sound that was not annoying or grating. It also comes with several levels of filters. It comes with two pre-filters (which are washable), a HEPA filter, an anti bacterial filter, a carbon filter, and then can be fitted with your choice of a few others. Ours was the “odor defense” variety, though others are tailor made for other purposes- toxin absorber, pet allergy, and germ defense. It seems like they put in everything but the kitchen sink into this device. We actually tested out installing and replacing a filter, which can be a bit of a process on some other units- the Rabbit Air succumbed easily and it only took a few moment to replace.

The SPA-780A comes with Mood Light Indicator that provides a range of blues, purples and pinks. Some might find the Mood Light soothing and relaxing, we just found it a bit unnecessary. There is also an included remote, helpful when choosing between the four modes of operation- auto (the name says it all), rhythmic cleaning (quick cleaning and circulation), child (silent running using the purple mood light) and sleep (changes to silent running three minutes after darkness is detected and emits a mood light at low brightness). This model is Energy-Star Certified, which means it should cost less to run than many competitors. We didn’t have a chance to test out the warranty, but were reassured by their offer of five years on parts and labor and 24/7 technical support. The only downside is the price- others can certainly cost less, but generally you do get what you pay for.
