There is no room and no screen to separate the gravel from choking off the impeller and getting the gravel wedged into the impeller causing it to just completely fail in less then it takes for the thing to turn on.

IF you are using it as a syphon and letting the gravel and the sediment all run into a bucket, the syphon pressure does make the fast moving gravel by pass the impeller but a few pieces will eventually get wedged into the impeller and poof... I bought a really nice one after I saw this one could have worked had it by made correctly. $49 at Big Al's online and comparing the two, I can tell you that this one I am reviewing should never have been born!
