An air purifier is one of the main items of our clients’, along with water purifier. BDCI has been participating air purifier project since establishment. There are two assignments involved for every project. One of them is to suggest and maintain Coway’s sole formative language, and the other one is to deliver design as the fresh impetus to their entire products.by Chiaki Murata x BDCI Project Management – BDCI Product Design – Chiaki Murata It was multifunctional ‘All-in-one’ product that is a complex of a humidifier, dehumidifier, and air purifier, in 2007. The request of the client was to design for mass production, with smart with emphasis on UI. Japanese designer Chiaki Murata is Applied Physics graduate. It is a fundamental process to think about the original about the layout of the product when we work with him. When it comes to multifunctional product, people tend to overlook the internal layout, and that concludes to the enormous volume of product.

First of all, the design of control panel and air outlet has been refined. The air outlet is made of one simple part, so it represented the completeness of 3 functions, in one product. There are two water level indicators for dehumidifier and humidifier, so users will be able to check the water lever easily. Everything, including the parting lines, handles, water level indicators were designed with consistency to appeal integrity of it. The big handle on the slanted body attracts attention at the first sight. The handle is not only iconic but also designed for comfort when user moving around the product in terms of size and the soft grip of under the bar. The unique shape of the product made a successful entrance for Sharp in Chinese air purifier market. The symbolic form was unique enough to give influence to competitor’s product. The air outlet of purified air is located on the rear side of the product and tried to maximize the performance. UI was designed in stable type but refined for ease of use.

The bar type indicator was continued as it is one of the characters of Sharp’s interface.
